Setting Up A Media Server in 3 Easy Steps (under 5mins)
Hi everyone, I’m glad you decided to read this tutorial as it will definitely save you a lot of time and money. Heres the list of things you’ll need:
- Ethernet Cable
- PS3
- PC/laptop
Thats it!… And you probably already have an ethernet cable laying around already as I found I had. If not you can buy one for less than 5 $/£s or so.
I’ve been looking at some other tutorials for setting up your media server’s and they’re all very complicated when they don’t have to be. I set up my media server In minutes ( and very few might I add.)
Follow these 3 simple steps and you’ll be watching videos listing to music etc. in no time…
1. Download “Vuze”…
Vuze is a simple program for downloading torrents (free videos, movies, music files, etc.) You can download it here. Vuze isn’t just a good looking “BitTorrent” (Torrent Downlaoder) But it’s the most powerfull, and in my opinion the most flexible, you can search many sites for the movie, video, music, game, etc. your looking for then it will automatically convert your files to the right video/music/image format. You can also select what type of defintion you want, HD or SD – high or standard definition, this is useful if your pc isn’t the quickest and/or you don’t have a HD ready TV. But what’s even handier is it’s also a Media Server, Which is the reason you just downloaded(/currently/about to download) it.
2. Get your “Ethernet Cable”…
As I wrote above you can find these for less than 5 pounds/dollars. If you think you already might have one here’s a pic of a basic ethernet cable…

3. Setting up your Media Server…
Once you’ve got your ethernet cable, plug it into the back of your PS3/PS3 Slim and then plug the other end into the back of your PC. Vuze should come up with a little box follow the instructions to set up your PS3 Media Server.
When finished you will see a little PS3 Icon, when you un-plug your ethernet cable, your PS3 icon will turn grey to show ther’e is no connection. to add content simply drag and drop, vuez will sort out all the filenames and put them in the right folder as I explained before. Here’s a sreenshot…

Go onto your PS3 and you’ll see a little vuze icon with a silver box around it. Click on it and it will show you all your files ordenated by:
- Downloads
- Movies
- Music
- Pictures
TroubleShooting
If you have any problems like
- Vuze not showing a setup box
- PS3 showing error
- PS3 not showing connection
These are all symptoms of the same problem, and it’s very easy to sort out.
On Windows…
Go to your firewall settings and either allow Vuze through or disable the firewall entirely (I don’t recommend this.)
On Mac (OS X)…
Go to Network Preferences then to ethernet cable and set it to “DHCP”.
If your problem wasn’t listed post a comment and I will try to help you sort it out to the best of my abilities.
Hopefully this tutorial will help you!
